Velar lateral allophony in Mee (Ekari)

چکیده
Velar lateral sounds are rare and their acoustics contextual effects understudied. Positional variants of velar laterals also rarely reported. This paper documents a previously unknown allophony pattern the in Mee (Trans New Guinea; Indonesia), based on an elicitation study with two speakers controlled set recordings from one speakers. Our main dataset included carrier phrase words lateral, representing diverse contexts where occurs. acoustic findings suggest that is realized as laterally released stop [ɡᶫ] before front vowels, uvular closure followed by fricative release [ɢ ʁ ] back vowels. In line this description, we found differences second formant preceding vowel periodicity for allophones. We explore implications our typology laterals.

Acoustic Properties of the Kuman Voiceless Velar Lateral Fricative
Selected timeand frequency-domain acoustic features of the voiceless allophone of the exotic velar lateral fricative in the Papuan language Kuman are described for one male speaker. This comprises specification of F-pattern and its co-articulation with the preceding vowel, and the articulatory interpretation of spectrographic details, including a (for fricatives) unexpected transient.
متن کاملCombining Indicators of Allophony
Allophonic rules are responsible for the great variety in phoneme realizations. Infants can not reliably infer abstract word representations without knowledge of their native allophonic grammar. We explore the hypothesis that some properties of infants’ input, referred to as indicators, are correlated with allophony. First, we provide an extensive evaluation of individual indicators that rely o...
متن کاملGradience, allophony, and chain shifts
The monophthongization of /ay/ in the Southern United States is disfavored by following voiceless consonants (PRICE) relative to voiced or word-final environments (PRIZE). If monophthongization is the trigger for the Southern Shift (Labov, 2010) and chain shifts operate as predicted by a modular feedforward phonological theory (cf. Bermúdez-Otero, 2007), this implies PRICE and PRIZE must be two...
متن کاملSupralaryngeal control in Korean velar stops
The aim of this study was to investigate the supralaryngeal control of the production of the Korean three-way contrast in velar stops. First, an EMA-experiment with three Korean speakers was carried out, and the kinematic properties of the tongue back were analyzed (length of the deceleration phase of the movement, peak velocity, peak acceleration, amplitude and duration of the looping movement...
